If you have an old dining table that you want to restore, there are a few things you can do to bring it back to life. With a little elbow grease and some inexpensive materials, you can refinish your dining table and make it look like new again. Keep reading to learn how to restore an old dining table on a budget.
To refinish your dining table, you’ll need the following supplies:
-Sandpaper in various grits
-A palm sander (optional)
-Stain
-Polyurethane
-Paint
-Paintbrush or foam brush
-Items to protect your working surface (drop cloth, newspapers, etc.)
– Couch foam for restuffing dining chairs (if you’re doing them too)
Once you have all of your supplies gathered, you’re ready to get started!
Step One: Sanding
The first step is to sand down your table. If the finish on your table is in good condition, you can start with 150-grit sandpaper. If the finish is in poor condition or if the paint is peeling, start with 80 grit sandpaper. No matter what type of sandpaper you start with, be sure to finish with 220-grit sandpaper so that the surface is nice and smooth. Once you’ve sanded down the entire surface of your table, wipe it off with a damp cloth to remove any dust.
Step Two: Staining or Painting
Now it’s time to add color back to your table. If you’re going to stain your table, apply the stain evenly with a cloth and let it sit for 10-15 minutes. Wipe off any excess stain with a clean cloth. If you’re going to paint your table, apply a coat of primer and let it dry for 24 hours before painting. Once the primer is dry, apply two coats of paint, allowing each coat to dry for 24 hours before applying the next one.
Step Three: Polyurethane
Regardless of whether you’re staining or painting your table, you’ll need to add a layer of polyurethane over the top when you’re finished coloring it. Apply the polyurethane evenly with a brush or foam brush, letting it dry for 24 hours between coats. Add as many coats as necessary until you’ve achieved the level of protection and shine that you desire.
And that’s all there is to it! With just a little bit of work, you can take an old dining table and make it look like new again. If you’re also doing your table’s matching chairs, some inexpensive couch foam is ideal for this, as it can be cut to your desired size easily.
